said they were the fraud dept verifying my application that i submitted. when i called back later, they gave me different number from the website with an employee id number to verify. but, when i called, they couldn't find any record of someone calling me earlier in the day, but did say that was a capital one phone number

I received a voicemail from "Renee" from this number. She said that they were calling to verify that I was indeed the person who submitted the application, and left a 14 digit application number for reference. I looked up the Fraud Prevention hotline on Capitol One's website (1-800-427-9428) and called them directly. They told me that it was not a scam, and helped me move forward with my application.

Left a voicemail referenced a recent application to capitol one (I did apply) stating it was the fraud protection department. I thought it may be a scam, so I called capitol one directly. Capital one fraud dept did not seem to know what it was about, but after bouncing to a few departments, it was verified it was indeed capitol one calling me. They wanted to make sure the recent application was actually me. If you get this call and did not apply, someone may be using your information to apply.

not the real "Capitol One Fraud Department" (Scam call) reported by


When I was called from this number earlier today (before 9AM- first tip that it is a scam) I told the woman calling that I was recording the phone call. She hesitated for a minute and then said that she could not talk to me if I was recording the call and hung up. Scammers hate when there is evidence of them trying to steal your ID and money.
