It turns out that this was in fact CapitalOne's fraud department checking with me about an application for a credit card that I did not submit. I called the CapitalOne phone number from their website. Was passed to the application department. They confirmed the 855-522-7663 was CapitalOne. They cancelled the application that I did not submit. Be Safe on these things. Call the published number of the company and inquire. I am glad that I did!

This is an actual call from Capital One fraud prevention. I have been a victim of identity theft recently and they were verifying that I did (or did not) make a credit card application. I had seen the inquiry pop up on a report, so I had a heads up already. I returned the call, the number is legit.

They called me to verify a recent application. I called Capital One's main number and they said it was fraud. There was no such thing and the number is fake. They even gave me a application number, trying to be convincing.

I got a call from this number I questioned them because they wanted to verify me for a credit card i applied for (which i did apply) but questioned them as I did not know if they were legit. they were very gracious and rep gave me her Capital One Employee # and asked me to call Capital one number on my card and verify that this number and this employee were legit, I hanged up with her, and called capital one with number on back of my CC and the fraud dept. verified that the number was legit C1 Fraud Dept number so i called back to this number 1-855-522-7673 and they verfied me and I received the welcome package for my new Capital One Credit Card, so if you did not apply and got a call you might want to verify your info with them on this number and also let them know it was NOT you applying for their card so they can STOP the fraud with your name. this is 100% LEGIT number for Capital One Fraud Department. Hope this helps I know some say its not but that is NOT true I just verified and got my email for our new card (also i never told them what kind of card i applied for and they knew) so 100% Legit. hope this helps someone!

Called stating they had received application for a capital one sable card, think it it was fraudulent and wanted to confirm with me. Wanting personal id information. Got suspicious. Called capital one directly on number listed on current credit card . Per capital one, they do not gave this number in their system. They stated likely fraudulent. Requested more information for investigation. THIS NUMBER IS A SCAM NUMBER- NOT SURE HOW THIS OTHER REVIEWS ARE CLASSIFYING IT AS LEGIT WHEN CAPITAL ONE SAYS IT ISN'T.

You must have never worked entry level corporate jobs. These departments don’t work together. Probably not even in the same state. They will always default to “it’s not in our system” when the truth is they just don’t know or can’t find it. If they confirm it without knowing for sure then they become liable. “It’s likely fraud” is their version of “caution hot coffee”

I received a VM from this number claiming to be Capital One. They said they had an application under my name and wanted to verify. I called Capital One directly and spoke to their fraud department. They have no record of any application under my name. The agent could not tell me if the number itself is legit but he did tell me since there is no application in my name, the call was a scam.

Just received a voice mail from 8555227663, claiming to be from Capital One fraud department. I called back, and after giving the woman the application number that she left on the VM she insisted in having full name, date of birth and Social Security number. Have credit monitoring & got an alert yesterday that Capitol One had accessed it. Started wheels in motion to find out more info. Cap One called today & asked if I had applied for credit card-I had not. Only asked to verify my name & last 4 digits of SSN. They get your phone number from the fraud alert. The Capital One Fraud Dept said that they could not tell me if this number was legitimate. Not sure how anyone else on this board was able to get them to do so. The call was about a former employee applying, so if his name is on the card, then we can't be liable, but the Fraud Dept didn't care that the employee has a criminal record for identity theft and fraud. The whole experience is absolutely ridiculous. How would they not care if someone is opening a fraudulent account? No wonder our interest rates are usurious. Not going to worry about it, since it appears Capital One doesn't care.

Called Capitol One and they confirmed it is not one of their numbers. I see conflicting information in the reviews here, but that was my experience. The first call I got from this number stated that they were acknowledging I had not applied for a card, but I hung up on them when they wanted to offer me information on how to protect myself. I did not answer because my phone identified it as Spam Risk. However, the voicemail sounded legit. So I called Capital One Fraud Dept. number I found on the website. They were able to determine that it was a fraudulent application submitted online in my name. I do not have a Capital One card and did not apply for one. They flagged it fraudulent and are notifying the credit bureaus. It's a legit call.

Came through on iphone as Possible Spam Call. Person claiming Capital One was following up on an application and provided a application Ref # and this number to call back. Called Capital One Fraud line based on Experian reporting a Captial One inquiry just yesterday and the fact that I had a fraudulent charge 3 weeks ago on my Cap One Spark card that was recently resolved. Fraud representatives checked into any recent activity and claimed wife was trying to add me as secondary user on her Cap One card (not the case). After hanging up, promptly cancelled my Cap One Spark Card online. Will also be closing wife's Cap One Personal Card tomorrow. One fraudulent activity (which was handled with ease) and this recent odd call are enough for us to bail. Don't NEED the cards or the type of service that makes us question security.

I received a voice mail from this number (according to caller ID), mentioning fraud and asking me to call them back on at same number. I called the Capital One fraud department on their fraud number from their website, and the person I spoke to there did confirm that this number is one of their real fraud numbers. So it checks out, it's legitimate.

It was layered, detailed, with information that paralleled Cap One, down to the "agent" having a 6 digit ID that uses the same sequence of numbers as Cap One. In addition, she even advised me to call the number on the back of the card to verify this number was accurate. Crazy, because if you "take her word for it" you would then give info they can use. DO NOT GIVE EVEN YOUR NAME. I asked her to tell ME my name as my phone number should be bound to my account and she couldn't.

I called Capitol One # on my statement and was put to the Fraud Team Dept. She said that the phone # is legitimate, but I should check with them anyway because the number could have been hijacked and used for a scam. I had not applied for a cc so this may have been a scam.
