Today I received a voice mail from “Taylor “ who claimed to be from the Capital One fraud department. She left a call back number 855-522-7663 and an “ application “ number 86824298. Instead of calling that number I obtained a number by searching for Captial one. Once I was connected to the fraud department they determined that the phone number was not in their system nor was the application number in a format that they use.

I received a voicemail stating they were from the fraud dept. I felt uneasy so I called the Capital One # from the website and provided the # they had left along with the 14 digit App ID. Capital One verified the same App ID. This is indeed a legit #. If you didn’t apply for anything, I would let them know so that they can mark application as a fraud. I had applied for card and they were just verifying because I had a fraud alert on my credit report.

Good number. Capital One Fraud Protecttion. Making sure an application that was submitted is the same person on the application. I was the one on the application. I called the customer service number and they transfered me to the fraud protection department. The person I spoke with told me the name of the person that had left me a message.

I called Cap One Fraud Dept and confirmed this is their number! Of course, with all the conflicting information online about this number just do yourself a favor and Google "Capital One Fraud Dept" and click on Cap One website and it will give you the current toll free number for you to call. But if you already answered or called them back, it's fine.

Actual Capital One number calling to verify application for a card. If you don't answer and call Cap1's fraud line back at 1-800-427-9428 they'll bounce you around to a few departments before eventually sending you to the one that 855-522-7663 leads to directly anyway. Call Capital One and verify for yourself, this is a real number of theirs. Highly recommend calling them back if you receive a call from this number, because either they need you to verify you applied for a card or someone applied for a card in your name.

Ditto. Seems to be legit. Capital One detected a fishy application and called me for verification. As an prior Capital One customer, I cannot tell whether they used my old phone number or the number from the phony application. They recommended: 1) placing an "Extended Alert" with the three credit organizations, 2) adding a credit monitoring application (for real time notification of "credit events"); this free application (CreditWise) is from Capital One, 3) visit the federal identify theft webpage, identifytheft.gov

Received a voicemail wanting to confirm that I had made application for a new credit account. The number that called (855-522-7663) was different from any of the numbers shown on the Capital One site. I called Capital One directly (800-427-9428)and they confirmed that an application had been submitted on 5/23/18. This application was canceled and I should receive a paperwork confirming the cancelation within 7-10 business days.

Beware, this call sounds legitimate. I rejected the call and got this voicemail: Hi, this is Steven from Capital one's application fraud team. This important message is for John Wilson. We're calling to verify a recent application. Please call us back as soon as possible. You can reach us during our normal business hours of Monday through Friday 8 a.m. To 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. To 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time at +1-855-522-7663. Your application number is [redacted]. Your application number again is [redacted] please refer to this number when giving us a call back. We look forward to hearing from you soon. Have a wonderful day. I directly searched for Capital One's fraud number (1-800-427-9428), called them, and had them search for pending applications with my name, phone number, or social. They found no pending applications. Do not give any information to this phone number! Call Capital One directly to verify, and then report the call.

​I received a phone call stating they were from the Capital One obligation fraud team with an important message for me to verify a recent credit card application in my name. They asked that I Please give us a call back as soon as possible. They said they have issued a secure link email on file, & asked that I provide my email and that I take a photo copy of a government ID, and they will securely relay this information back to Capital One. They said to please follow the instructions in the secure link using my computer or tablet. They stated if I didn't apply for this credit or have any questions to call them at 855-522-7663, and my application number is 14619911118322. I didn't call them back as I'm sure it is a phishing scam.
