HP Printer support call back (Service) reported by


Scheduled call back after the weekend that I had forgotten about. She tried me 3 times while I was still trying to figure out if it was a scam call. This is one I wish I would have answered. She was a lot of help to me and though she was from Philipines and had a strong accent I could still understand her which is a rarity.

It is funny that the man that I spoke with claimed he was from "Dell Technical Support" considering he was spoofing from an HP Support number. Probably tried spoofing under a different number considering I have all of the known Dell ones blocked. Please, ANYONE who receives a call claiming to be Dell or HP technical support, HANG UP THE PHONE. Neither Dell nor HP will ever call you claiming your computer has been "sending error messages" or "is infected with a virus." What they are trying to do is a three step scam. Once they scare you into thinking there is actually something wrong with your computer, they will tell you to let them connect to your machine through an online screen sharing service, like GoToAssist or some other program. Then, once they are in, they will open up EventViewer on Windows and show you Operating System logs and will point out entries that are labeled "Error" or they will show you all of the "stopped services" on your machine. Please trust me, being a fresh-out-of-college software engineer, these are not indications that your computer is infected with a virus; merely showing information or logs of when your OS ran into an error that it was designed to run into, and has nothing to do with viruses or trojans. The scammer will then tell you that his company offers a cleaning service for $x.xx for one year, $xx.xx for two years and $xxx.xx for five years (or some other progressive pricing scheme). If you agree and pay the scammers, they might leave your computer untouched. But if you tell them that you dont want to pay, there are 3 things that could likely happen. 1: Because their scam only works on Windows machines, they will run SysKey and lock you out. SysKey is a program that essentially encrypts your hard drive such that you need to enter a password (that THEY select and you cannot see) upon system startup to d... Running out of space..long story short, if you get any calls from these scammers, tell them to F*CK OFF and hang up.
