Was getting a couple of calls from this number every week. Since the voicemail was automated (but official-sounding, I might add), I presumed it was a scam using a spoofed number that was the 2020 Census's helpline. After over a month of these calls, I dialed the number back (rather than just tapping the "call back," since the missed call was identified as spam). A representative quickly answered my call and asked for my Census ID and name. She checked and informed me that my case was closed (meaning I filled out the census with no issues). She then put me on hold briefly to check whether there was some underlying problem with my census filing. When she picked back up, she apologized that there was a technical difficulty with the lookup system. The representative politely told me that I was free to call back, but there did not seem to be a need to and hopefully they will take me off their call list. BOTTOM LINE: it is very unlikely that this is a scam call. My call back was odd, but not suspicious (i.e. no attempts to solicit sensitive information). If it is not a scam call, I would recommend the U.S. Census Bureau tell you in their voicemail why they are trying to contact you.

It does not matter if they are home or not. If you are paying for their well being, they are to be reported at that time. Not verified by some unknown. They should not have your name. Census is anonymous!

This number is legitimate. It is the US Census Bureau. I already turned in my Census form, but they had questions about the residences of my college children. Took 7 minutes to complete their follow-up questions. Please be polite to them.

I agree that this is a legit number, and the Census Bureau representative was very friendly and appreciative that I called them back to answer the questions, primarily about college-aged children included in the Census.

Agree that this was a follow up call to the US Census. When I gave the Census ID number from the voicemail she pulled up all my answers to the 2020 census. So they had all my details and info already but they had questions about how often my college student kids lived at our home versus at their college addresses. Seemed legit.

Initial call sounded like robocall, but it's a completely legit number as one can confirm from US Census web site. It was follow-up from my census questionnaire. They mostly already had my data and were not phishing for anything new. The main topic was my college-age children, who were in transition from school back to home on April 1. So, there was some question how to count them.

These calls ARE legitimate and are part of the outbound calling quality control operation that the U.S. Census Bureau is required to do as part of the 2020 Census. As for the website URLs, the U.S. Census Bureau has several official U.S. government websites. The permanent official website is https://www.census.gov. They also set up TWO temporary websites just for the 2020 Census: a) https://2020census.gov which is the informational website that includes FAQs, sample forms to preview, non-English language guides on answering the census, and other information for the public, media, and partners about the 2020 Census, and b) https://my2020census.gov/ which is new this census and is the online census form where you can provide your responses using an Internet-connected computer, smartphone or tablet. This site will close when the collection period for 2020 Census responses is over, currently scheduled to end this October.
