They do ask for your social or nelnet account number. They can give you the main number to call back if you do not believe them. If they call you you have outstanding student loans. Pay your bill!

Dude, it's a scam. I've been getting calls from this number and I have never gotten a student loan in my life (or any loan for that matter), why would they be calling me? Also, why would they need your social, even if it was a legit call?? They should already have it, so if they needed you to verify who you were, they should only ask for the last 4 digits. You should never give your full social security number or any personal account info to anyone over the phone, especially if it's someone calling you! If you've got even a hint of doubt that they might not be who they say they are by asking questions about personal info, use your common sense and just hang up. The only time you should ever give out personal info like that over the phone is if it's someone YOU are calling. If you did give them that info, you should probably be keeping a close eye on your bank/loan/financial accounts for unknown withdraws.

scam 100% i called my school directly to find out my lenders. this person tried calling me a month ago but i heard on the news about the scamming that was going around with federal loans. next thing you know i get a phone call from them. i also contacted nelnet which i don't have an account with and reported them, however they tried to tell me they have a similar number which isn't true he wanted me to make an account with nelnet but for what if i have no loans with them. i personally feel everyone is scamming left and right. everyone just be extremely careful and don't give out any of your personal info esp your ssn which is what they asked me for which is the first bad sign.

Caller stated it was nelnet calling to collect a debt, who I do have a student loan through, and asked for my SSN. He refused to give me a business address, saying it was "against policy" which is not true, if they are calling to collect a debt they are required to provide a phone number and address. I was suspicious so contacted nelnet directly through their website and they have no record of a phone call being made and show my account in good standing.
