This number is strictly an automated line for people to call for status of their tax refund. The IRS will not call from this number, or any number unless they are already working with someone specifically but it will not be from this number. They do not have the resources to be calling individual taxpayers for any reason. That is why they send out so many letters and notices; it is far more efficient. Never, ever give your personal info to anyone calling and asking for social security number, drivers license number, date of birth, address or banking info. The IRS already has those details and will never call and ask for it. Calls FROM this number should be blocked.
