Spoke with a person from Medicredit who referenced a debt I knew I owed and for which I was begging the originating facility to turn over to a debt collector (long story). While I had to firmly set the tone of the call (ie: I'm giving you no information beyond what you have), once that was established, the agent was courteous and efficient. It helped I think that I made a good-faith payment against the debt and made it clear I already knew how I was handling it and what I required of them for us to complete our business moving forward. Seriously, if you're getting a call from this number, pick up. If the debt isn't valid, you need to address that with them. If the debt is valid, running from it isn't going to solve the issue. Debt collectors are not your enemy -- they're just trying to do their job to collect a debt you accrued according to the documentation they were provided. If you contest the debt, that's fine -- you need to communicate that to them, which means picking up. And try to be polite with debt collectors in-so-far as they allow you to be. Most of them are just people trying to do a job, they're not persecuting you -- and the rest, well, talk to a supervisor. If the heavy-handed tactics upset you, take a step back, think, decide the terms under which you're willing to continue with them, and communicate that respectfully. They will likely oblige you as it increases the odds they can get you to work with them.

I got several calls from this number. I answered believing it may have been from my credit card company. When somebody finally picked up, I asked what company this was, and how they got my number and they hung up.
