Attempt to hijack your number for use by robo-callers. (Scam call) reported by


Have identified what may be the use by robo-callers to capture the called person's (you) phone number. Your number is then used by the robo-callers to mask their calls, by indicating on other people's Caller ID that your number is calling them. I have personal experience (at least 3 different times) of answering a call that appears to be from a legitimate person (a Jane or John Doe) but in fact is a robo-call number, typically for an extended car warranty. If you call the number back that originally called you, it belongs to a business or individual whose name showed up on the caller ID, but has no relation with the attempted scam. For example, one number that called me was actually from a gentleman that was currently in the hospital. Another was for a legitimate business located in Durham.
