This is a legit phone call from CRA. I just called the general CRA number and they confirmed it.

Only provided first name. Did not provide employee# was evasive (Scam call) reported by Grover
I have had calls like this before and it followed the same pattern. "I'm from CRA - case number ,,," (He knew my name). Wouldn't specifically tell me why he was calling when I said I would call him back. Told me that another colleague would pick up the case if I reached voice mail. There is no reason why CRA would be calling me anyway so all the signals indicate a scam call.

caller claimed to be from CRA regarding a routine registration review of an HST acct. caller only gave first name which is suspicious if actually from CRA. called # from work phone and phone system informed me that number was unreachable from my area

Not stating my name.
I am actually an employee of CRA HST Registration review. We only give our first name for security reasons and for our protection. Not sure why the phone # wasn't able to work for you but if you tried to call it from a US phone that is probably why. And the reason an agent would call your work # is because that is the # you provided on the registration. If you read the bottom portion of your HST confirmation letter it states that you will be getting a follow-up phone call to finalize the registration. I completely understand your concern, but if you like you can telephone the Business Enquiries official CRA telephone line and verify that the call was in fact from CRA.
