A woman with an Indian accent called, claiming to be with a credit management company or debt collection agency. Wanted my personal information such as social security number.Claimed to be looking for a “Mitchell Thompson”. I hung up on her after telling her that I do not appreciate scam calls.

I've answered a few times, no one's there - I hear the VICIdial "bwoop" noise, then complete silence or "call center background noise" - they may have their dialer turned up too high - producing dropped calls, or bad phone service that cannot properly detect a human vs an answering machine, or reps who don't care enough to notice the call - which could explain the background noise calls... Collections calls do not have to be "solicited" - and it doesn't matter what DNC list you are on - if you owe money - you will be called - what governs this, to my knowledge, is the FDCPA - Fair Debt Collection Practices Act - even the allowed time of day isn't specified there - BUT - you do have some control there - their calls must be at a time that is convenient to YOU - if you go on record that you can ONLY discuss past due issues "Tuesdays from 3 to 4am - because I work nights, and that's when I am alone and able to discuss this information freely" - then that is when they are supposed to call you - IF they call you during that time - TAKE the call - but - if they continue to repeatedly call outside of those times, continue to specifically state your available times and you might have something there. Also - the "no message" - that is very indicative of a collection call - the calls that state "This call is ONLY for Mary Smith, if this is NOT Mary Smith, do NOT listen to this message" might sound good - but they're bullsh-t - especially if it is on a physical answering machine (if anyone still has one) - ESPECIALLY if it allows the message to be heard while being left where anyone would hear it - whether they "wanted to or not" - SAVE THOSE - they could really help you if you feel you are being harassed. BTW: BUSINESS DEBTS do NOT afford you ANY privacy - they can leave messages, call your house/job, and tell whoever answers...your kids/babysitter/co-workers...doesn't matter - so there's that...good luck!
