Cornerstone is contracted through the Department of Ed. If they are calling you, your number used to belong to someone who provided it to them, you're listed as a reference, or you have federal student loans. They are not a scam, and if you don't want to deal with them collecting your debt though repayment you'll deal with the DMCS collecting it through garnishment. Adult up.

This is a debt collection number - but it is Cornerstone loans customer service. If you call them (to make a payment, need help with your payment plan because you lost your job, etc) and speak with a representative, they are generally incredibly helpful and polite. The trick is calling them before you're in arrears or other difficult situation. In my experience, they only call if I've overlooked something, like forgot to turn in a form.

It's not the Department of Education. It's a third party which administers student loan debt. Legitimate, if annoying.

It's a scam posing as the Department of Education. The real deal wouldn't call you directly about student loans. Instead they'd have some student loan companies handle it.
