Phishing Tech Support (Scam call) reported by Don Sliger
I am a Computer Technician with nearly 40 years experience who serviced one of my customers computers and he explained to me the following situation they had. The customer had a problem with a Yahoo document program, he called Yahoo for support, they told him to call 800-401-3487 for Microsoft Support. Apparently the Yahoo site he first called initially was a fake Yahoo.com site with a scam phone number. When he called the MS phone number a third party tech support company said they were an authorized MS support provider. They remote connected to his laptop, ran tests and told him his computer was infected. They installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and CCleaner. Told him to pay them via an iTunes Gift Card for $200 using his credit card. They told him that the charge didn't go through, so they asked him again for that credit info. He discovered that his credit card had been charged 3 times for a total of $600. He called the scammer's number back and they told him they had fixed his problem and cursed him. I suggested to the customer to call the credit card company and explain to them his experience he had and see if there was any recourse he had. One more thing, I found the only thing the scammer did on his computer was to install the two free programs (Malwarebytes/CCleaner), good working copies. I found no malicious issues with his computer so apparently it was just a financial scam, nothing malicious was done to his laptop.
