Scam call reported by

This is long, but this scam is ridiculous! Someone by the name of Jeff Perkins called me a couple of times stating I had been mailed a letter approx 45 days ago and that they had not yet received a response which "raised a red flag with their office because people typically respond well within the 30 days allotted." He stated that he was calling from the legal outsourcing department of RMS (I later found out this stands for Recovery Management Systems). He was seeking my updated address and/or updated place of employment, and explained that I had a civil suit being drafted against me in the county I live in by a credit company using RMS' services. I was told that if I didn't contact their office, they'd "have to make further determinations against me pursuant to all applicable state & federal guidelines." When he responded to the voicemail I left him asking him what in the world he was talking about, he left me yet another voicemail that he couldn't leave that specific information on my voicemail due to federal law. So when I finally spoke to this Jeff Perkins over the phone, he explained that this company, which was never named, buys up debt to sue for the amount owed and they were seeking the balance to an outstanding credit card bill of mine. It was a legitimate bill, but the amount was much higher. I know this because I can now see it sitting on my credit report unpaid, under the same bank as before. I'm almost positive they somehow got ahold of an old credit card bill that I didn't shred. He also alleged that the creditor told him I had directly said I was not going to take care of this debt and that was the reason they were pursuing legal action. I was also told it had gone to 2 different creditors prior to them receiving it, which I know now is completely false. Unfortunately, when he told me I was looking at almost $2000 in court fees, I panicked & of course asked how to avoid this. He pretended to put me on hold and speak with the invisible Creditor Boog

and then offered to split it up into 2 payments, as long as they were no more than 30 days apart (how kind, right!?). Due to my panic and being too preoccupied at work to grasp the strangeness of all this, I gave him my bank info to automatically draft my account on 2 separate dates, since he said that was my only option outside of paying the entire sum that day. He then emailed me authorization forms to sign, which I stupidly did. So now the man has my signature as well. I closed and reopened my bank account the same day to avoid anything being drafted, but he now has my information, my signature, my new address, and made a joke that he won't use my email to look me up on Facebook. Well, I'm sure he already did that too. This man, or possibly group of people, working together sound very professional and intelligent. If by some incredibly rare chance that they are a legitimate business, the collecting practices they use are absolutely unheard of. I hope the police catch them before they can steal from honest people who believe they are truly paying off the debt that they are in.
